Q is for Queen

ISO 200 60mm f/6.4 1/60sec
Raided the piggy bank, placed coins on a piece of orange cardboard, used a bendy lamp light to create texture and shadows.

Handheld as I was experimenting with angles. Played with Hue and Saturation in Lightroom to make the orange look redder.

Comments: This was a late night practice shot to get some ideas on what might work when I did the 'proper' shot. But I haven't gotten around to doing it again so this will do or I'll never get to the end of the alphabet!

P is for Pomegranate

ISO 200 55mm f/11 1/15sec
Light from a desk lamp. Camera on tripod. Operated through phone app.

Comments: It can be difficult getting the Styling and the Lighting to do exactly what you want. Which is fine if you don’t have to match a brief because you can just go with whatever works. I find Still LIfe setups either work straight away, effortlessly, or they take forever and frustrate the hell out of you. This one wasn’t coming together the way I wanted. Maybe I can blame working in a corner of the loungeroom with makeshift equipment? At one point a reflector fell on the set and broke a bit off one of the pomegranates. Anyway, it has a sort of painterly look that I like so I can live with it.

N is for... Isolation Alphabet

N is for Native Flowers.

Fujifilm X-T2. 18-55mm lens. Tripod. Remotely triggered with iPhone app.
f/8 - 1.3sec - ISO 320 - 35mm
Window light.

I’d like a much larger space to get a greater distance between the flowers and the backdrop and the camera and the flowers. I’d like to retain the depth of field to have the flowers in focus but the background dropped right out of focus. But I’m isolating in a two bedroom bunker (with two others) so I have to make do with what I have.

N is for Nearly a Nude shot. Now that I’ve got the phone and camera talking to each other it’s a lot easier to take a selfie. When Lockdown started I decided to take a selfie in every room of the house (except the littlest one). It’s a small two bedroom flat so there aren’t a lot of rooms. I had a few ideas for the bathroom but really wanted to see what the steam would do. I like the misty, soft focus effect, although once the lens steamed up it was like heavy fog! I liked the movement in the towel in this shot.

M is for ... Mental Health. Deb's Isolation Alphabet Photography Challenge

M is for Mental Health. Moody, Melancholic, Mania, Madness, Misunderstanding, Morose, Mournful, Malaise, Mindfulness. Mystery, Marvellous, Mercurial and Me.

Mental health is still so poorly understood. Have a heart for those who are stuck in a dark place and can’t yet find a way to the sunshine. It’s like being in a living hell and if you’ve never been there, you really can’t comprehend what it’s like. The lies! The lies! The lies it tells you! Don’t tell them to suck it up or pull themselves together. Do you think they really want to feel that bad? Support them. Treat them like you would if they had a broken arm. Encourage them gently. Love them.

Tripod. Remote from iPhone. 2sec timer.

I managed to get the Remote Communication working so I could operate the camera from the phone. It was a bit glitchy but we got there in the end.
Grain added to image in Lightroom.
Slow(ish) shutter speed because I was playing around with movement in some shots.
